The Golub Family

Mexico

My grandparents left Lithuania by boat in 1920. Their intended destination was America. Big surprise when they disembarked prematurely in Mexico. My parents arrived as babies but eventually married (thanks to a matchmaker who used country-of-origin as the sole matching criteria), and had my brothers and me. Years later I completed my parents’ trip, came to the US and became an American citizen. I was proud to be an American–until I wasn’t. In January 2017, I renewed my Mexican passport. Mexico now allows dual citizenship and I wanted my Mexicanity back. That day, the Mexican consulate had a 50% off “Trump special.” I renewed my passport, and became a proud Mexicano.
